Like it or not, if you or your business sends commercial electronic messages (CEMs) to anyone in Canada, regardless of whether you live in Canada you should be aware of this legislation too. July 1, 2014 is the looming and fast approaching deadline when CASL will take effect. While there is a 36 month transition period ending June 30, 2017, it would be in the best interests to become CASL compliant as it is said to be the most severe of any country’s anti-spam legislation and violating its laws can result in expensive penalties – up to $1 million for individuals and $10 million for companies.
